Cockroaches or also known as roaches are often believed to be one of the dirtiest insects in the world. This is because they often thrive in unsanitary environments. But how accurate is this notion?

Cockroaches are nocturnal insects, and they prefer to live in the dark so when you see a cockroach at your house during the day, that is usually a sign of infestation. Nevertheless, you can mostly find them hidden in moist places like the sinks, stoves, behind refrigerators or under major appliances. They flourish in the dark to breed. Although it is also common to see them living in dirt, that doesn’t mean they are the dirtiest insect; they could be, but not all the time.

Roaches are like cats. They love cleaning their body, but when they live in a filthy environment, the germs and bacteria can stick to their hairy feet and transfer them to humans. That’s the main reason why they could be considered ‘dirty’ at times.

Cockroaches can live up to 40 minutes underwater, and they can live without a head for up to two weeks. How? Well, cockroaches have multiple ganglia or nerve cells that can control their body even without a head. However, they eventually die due to dehydration. They can survive underwater for 40 minutes because they have the ability to control their breath. Cockroaches love water, so if you think that you have an infestation, get rid of leaky pipes to prevent cockroaches from being attracted to your home.
