Types of Cockroaches in Ontario
Here are the major types of cockroaches found in Ontario.
German cockroach
These are among the most common types found and are smaller in size (13-16 mm). They are light brown and have two dark lines on their backs.


American cockroach
These cockroaches are larger (2.5 - 5 cm) than their German counterpart and are reddish-brown in colour. These cockroaches tend to fly and eat a wide variety of items.
Oriental cockroach
These types of cockroaches are darker than the German variant and grow between 1.8 cm to 2.5 cm. They have a slimy appearance.


Wood cockroach
These cockroaches are very similar to German cockroaches but seldom survive indoors. They are found outside amongst trees, rotting logs, and firewood piles.
Brown-banded cockroach
Measuring only 10 - 14 mm, these are the smallest variety found in Ontario. These cockroaches have a small, light brown band on the wings and front side and are commonly found inside heated homes. They do not need as much moisture as other varieties.
