Age  -

Mr. Douglas “Doug” McMullin of Lethbridge beloved husband of Mrs. Kathy McMullin, passed away on Saturday, May 25th, 2024, at the age of 73 years.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Kathy; daughter Kate (Aaron, Finn); and daughter Anne (Avery).

Doug was born in Lethbridge to Dean and Edna. He grew up with brothers Roger and Bruce and sister Jane. There is no photographic evidence, however, we think he came into this world with a fishing rod in his hands. The call of the Henderson Lake fish was strong and many times the Truancy Officer from Hamilton Junior High would come and collect Doug to return him to class, always knowing exactly where to find him.

Doug went on to become a teacher. He spent his career with the County of Lethbridge (Palliser). Several of those years were as principal of McNally and Readymade Schools. He also taught in Coalhurst and Coaldale.

Every minute of his summer breaks were used to the maximum. And that meant being outdoors. We camped in a tent, a car, several different vans – one with Kate as a baby. When Anne was born, we moved to trailers.  And there was always watercraft involved. Fishing boats, fly fishing pontoon craft, canoes, kayaks and windsurfing boards.

Doug and his brother Roger thought if you lived in such a windy place, you should have fun with it, so they were original Windsurfer One Design owners. And now, besides being on the water fishing, there was another passion.  Doug became an expert sailor, as did the rest of the family.

Doug had the gift of the gab and a great sense of humour, so he easily connected with all people. Extra time had to be allocated for simple errands as Doug seemingly knew every second person.  We would like to thank everyone who has reached out, or had a funny thought, a memory or a kind word.

Doug’s last years were an example of perseverance through medical hardships.  There was a bright spot though. Just over seven years ago the wonderful little human named Avery was born. She mystified, amazed and delighted him. Being a grandpa brightened his life.

Doug passed away peacefully on May 25 at the age of 73. His last months were spent at Park Meadows Village. We are beyond grateful for their kindness, competence and hard work. Luckily, his beloved dog Kenna was able to visit often, jumping up on the bed for many snuggles.

In lieu of donations and such, please just go outside, preferably by a body of water where a fish may swim. Or cheer on the Raptors, Flames or Blue Jays!

Doug, your family loves and misses you.

Doug will be privately remembered by his loving family and friends.
