Through careful observation and examination, a physiotherapist can assess how much your movement is reduced or restricted due to an injury, disease, or other disorder. They can then implement a treatment plan to improve your range of motion and level of function, prevent and manage any pain you may be suffering, and thus promote lasting fitness and health. A physiotherapist can also increase your education and awareness... helping you avoid the need for future trips to the clinic!

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No, you do not need a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy. However, your insurance company may require one before reimbursing you for physiotherapy treatment (see your policy).

How quickly will I be seen for my first appointment?

What should I expect on my first visit?

On arrival, you will be asked to complete several intake forms, including a brief medical questionnaire. A registered physiotherapist will then carry out a thorough assessment of your condition.

What does an assessment involve?

The physiotherapist will review your medical history and ask questions about your concerns. The physical part of the assessment will include observations of your posture, movement and any physical abnormalities. It will also comprise a hands-on examination of the areas affected by, or responsible for, your condition.
Following the assessment, the physiotherapist will explain your condition and determine a specific treatment plan.

Do you treat lower back pain?

Yes. We can treat all kinds of musculoskeletal pains, injuries, functional difficulties or restrictions in movement.

I’ve just had a car accident. What should I do?

Accepted Answer

We recommend that you first visit your family doctor. They can arrange any necessary tests (including X-rays) that may assist us in properly assessing the extent of your injuries.
Next, your doctor will probably advise you to begin physiotherapy. At Advantage Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, you can usually book an appointment to be assessed by a registered physiotherapist within 24 hours.

I’ve hurt myself at work. Can you help?

We will happily give you an appointment immediately, but please be aware...
We cannot see you as a WSIB patient until WSIB approves your claim.  In the meantime, you will be responsible for paying for any treatment.
However, when you do receive the letter from WSIB approving you for health benefits, we will be happy to complete the necessary paperwork and submit the subsequent treatment invoices to WSIB.

My doctor has referred me to a different clinic, but I want to come to you. Is this possible?

Yes. You may use your referral anywhere. The insurance company will accept it for reimbursement, even if it is for a different clinic.

Will my Extended Health Benefits cover physiotherapy?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, yes. There is usually a limit to how much coverage you receive, and you may require a doctor's referral to qualify. In some cases, we can bill directly to your insurance company online. Please check with your provider for details.

Question 12

Doesn’t OHIP cover physiotherapy?

Accepted Answer

Most people are not eligible for publicly funded physiotherapy. However, children, seniors, certain people who have had an overnight stay in hospital, and social assistance recipients qualify. Click here for more details.
