House Fire Prevention

A plan for fire prevention in your home is essential for your peace of mind and safety. In as little as 30 seconds a fire can ignite. Therefore, it's important to take steps to prevent a house fire as well as know what to do in the event of a fire in your home. An average of 24,000 house fires occur every year in Canada. In 2020, in the province of B.C. there were 2,834 house fires with sadly twenty-nine deaths and a hundred and fifty injuries. One of the most common initial causes of a fire in a home is the result of a open flame on a stove and flammable liquids left unattended while cooking.

Fire Prevention Steps

1. Check / test smoke alarms every month to ensure that they are in proper working order.

2. Change the batteries in the smoke alarm and c/o detectors once a year. Smoke detectors have a general life span of 8-10 years and should be replaced accordingly.

3. Inform all family members about fire safety.

4. Have an established plan in what to do in the even of a house fire.

5. Keep matches, lighters, and lit candles out of reach from small children.

6. Never cover active baseboard space heaters.
   

What to do in the Event of a Fire

1. Leave your home immediately.

2. Call 9-1-1.

3. Do not try to take your possession with you, and do not return to your home if it is on fire.

4. If you or your cloths catch on fire then do Stop, Drop, and Roll to extinguish the flames.
