First things first. You may not be required to file your tax return. I explained this in another blog. However, if you are a college or university student and paid for tuition during the year, it is highly recommended that you file your tax return to validate your tuition credits, even though you may not have earned any income in that year.

This is very important because CRA only recognizes tuition credits via tax return. Once you file your tax return and report the amount embedded in your T2202 you will have a tuition credit available to use in your current or future tax returns, or even transfer certain amount to your spouse.

But, how about the tuition refund? This is a misunderstanding surrounding this subject. You don't get a refund for the tuition you paid. The amount paid becomes credit that can be used to reduce the taxable amount on your tax return and thus reduce the amount you owe or perhaps help increase your tax refund. In other words, it is a type of deduction.

At iRefund your situation is treated with extreme care and you can rest assure your tuition will be properly reported.
