Gua Sha Massage Technique

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medicine healing method where a smooth-edged tool is used to stroke the skin. This motion raises small red dots under the skin called petechiae. The appearance of the petechiae is the clearing of blocked qi from your energy pathways.

Gua sha therapy is especially effective at treating fascial adhesions, including Dupuytren’s contracture, carpal tunnel syndrome, IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, and common ailments such as frozen shoulder, headaches, and low back pain. It can also help treat inflammatory conditions where fluid is getting stuck in some regions of the body.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping is an ancient healing therapy that some people use to ease the pain. A provider places cups on your back, stomach, arms, legs, or other body parts. Inside the cup, a vacuum or suction force pulls the skin upward. Cupping is a form of traditional Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine. People have practiced cupping therapy for thousands of years.

People mostly use cupping to relieve conditions that cause pain. Some people say it also helps with chronic (ongoing) health issues. Cupping may ease symptoms of:

  • Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Back pain, neck pain, knee pain and shoulder pain.

  • Breathing problems, such as asthma.

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • Gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel disease (IBD).

  • Headaches and migraines.

  • High blood pressure (hypertension).
