Some maintenance simply requires you to swap out parts, like air filters – you need a new car air filter every 12 months or 20,000 km, whichever comes first. Windshield Wipers can be replaced after about six months or a year of use. The packaging for the new blades should have a general set of instructions and a helpful diagram.
Most spark plugs need replacing after about 50,000 km, you should be able to locate your spark plugs fairly easily, because they’re attached to thick rubbery wires with either four, six, or eight plugs, depending on how many cylinders your car has. Remember, spark plugs are installed in a certain order, which you need to keep so only replace one at a time.

Oil is the life blood of your car so take your time to do it right and recycle the old oil. Changing your oil is the dirtiest job on the list, but it might be the most rewarding too.
Finally, there are a few things that you should keep an eye on regularly like battery levels and that your lights are still working. Check your drive belts – they run everything from the alternator to the a/c compressor. Check your fluids, in addition to oil, transmission fluid, radiator fluid, and even windshield washer fluid levels. And check your tire pressure weekly and prior to long trips, it can affect fuel economy, handling, and comfort.
